Porsche 917K — Imola

Number 12. Gulf blue and orange at full speed on the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. This is a panning shot — the camera tracks the Porsche 917K through its arc while the background dissolves into horizontal streaks of colour. The car stays sharp. The guardrails, the tarmac, and the grandstands become motion.

The technique is as old as motorsport photography itself, and it exists for one reason: to show what speed looks like when the car is the only thing standing still. Photographed at Imola Classic during Peter Auto’s Classic Endurance Racing programme, it captures the 917K competing on the very circuit where Nino Vaccarella, Jacky Ickx, and Henri Pescarolo won in the same era these cars were built.

A study in the kinetic energy of an endurance icon.
